COMPLEX OF JITTERBUGS 1976
In this kinetic sculpture, eleven single cell jitterbugs coordinate, producing a complex array of Vector Equilibria alternating with octahedra which, even when static, presents a spectacular display of two complementary polyhedra combining in a space filling arrangement. The entire sculpture transforms kinetically, octahedra expanding into Vector Equilibria and Vector Equilibria contracting into octahedra, each cell going through an intermediary icosahedral phase. Fuller calls this transformational interchange "spheres becoming spaces and spaces becoming spheres." The translation of abstract mathematical concept to physical realization is both an engineering feat and an aesthetic triumph.
