An Exhibition of Quilts and Prints by the Women from Gee’s Bend

July 20 - Sept 21, 2018

This exhibition included 21 etchings and 3 large-scale quilts made by four artists (Mary Lee Bendolph, Louisiana Bendolph, Loretta Bennett, and Loretta Pettway) from Gee’s Bend, Alabama. The etchings, directly relating to the renowned quilt imagery, are a result of collaboration between the women of Gee’s Bend with master printers at Paulson Fontaine Press in Berkeley, California. Together they utilized an innovative technique devised to make a transfer from an actual small-scaled sampler quilt to an etching plate coated with a thin layer of wax and then treated with acid to create the printable image.
